It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tom Lucas, a legendary journeyman makeup artist, on February 3, 2025 at the age of 89. Tom was a beloved husband, father, and a revered professional who left an indelible mark on the world of film and television.
Tom was born on March 8, 1935, and became a member of IATSE Local 706 on November 12, 1968. Over his illustrious career, he gained a reputation as a highly skilled, street-smart makeup artist. He was honored to serve as the personal makeup artist for Michael Douglas on numerous films, building a close friendship along the way. He also had the privilege of being the personal makeup artist for Richard Gere and Diane Keaton, contributing his talent to their projects with great dedication and skill. His notable film credits include Disclosure, A Perfect Murder, The Game, Primal Fear, The Godfather III, American President, and Outlaw Blues, where he met his wife, actress Susan St. James. Their union was marked by mutual respect and love, and together they had two beautiful children, Harmony Lucas and Sunshine Lucas. Though Tom and Susan were married for only six years, their bond was deep, and Tom was a devoted partner, managing Susan’s career so she never had to take a phone call—he handled everything with care and dedication.
In 1999, Tom was honored with his gold card, a recognition of his outstanding contributions to the industry. He officially retired in 2009, but his legacy as a consummate professional and cherished friend lives on. Tom was known not only for his immense talent but also for his generosity of spirit. He was a treasure to work with and always took care of those around him, whether on set or in his personal life. His wit, wisdom, and heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tom is survived by his beloved children, Harmony and Sunshine, and his many friends and colleagues who will forever remember him as a gifted artist and a kind, selfless man.
