MICHELE BURKE
Journeyman Make-up Artist

After emigrating from Ireland to Canada with no make-up skills Michele Burke took classes offered by the Canadian government then apprenticed with a well-known Canadian make-up artist.  She slept on the floor and worked on three films for no pay.  After the third one she grabbed a film no one else would take - Quest for Fire.  The production took her to Africa and the Scottish Highlands, she had a crew of 25 and ended up winning the Oscar - the first woman to win the award for make-up artistry. Two more films depicting Neanderthals (Iceman and Clan of the Cave Bear, with Michael Westmore) plus her skills and abilities to do her own lab work and proficiency with prosthetics launched Michele and gave her a platform to pioneer gore and special make-up effects that are commonplace today. She was also ooe of the first women to  have her own make-up lab.  Michele won her 2nd Oscar for Bram Stoker’s Dracula and has been nominated six more times (Interview with the Vampire, Austin powers, The Cell, Rock of Ages, Vanilla Sky, Cyrano de Bergerac) and has been awarded with the BAFTA, Saturn Award, Hollywood Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards and an Emmy.  Even though she is credited often as the make-up designer for a film, Michele is also very hands-on as the department head and normally does the make-up on principal actors, and maintains the budget.  Her roster of actors includes Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Renee Zellweger, Penelope Cruz, Sharon Stone, Kirsten Dunst, Beyonce and Kerry Russell.  As a long-time member of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences, Michele was a diligent advocate for Hair Stylists to be listed as part of the team on the Oscar.  She has been a mentor to make-up artists around the world including the AMPAS Gold.  She has traveled the world as a lecturer and conducted workshops, and was awarded an Honorary Professorship at the University of Shanghai..  Michele Burke has also been acknowledged with a very special recognition by the Irish Film and Television Awards.

 


JOHN E. JACKSON
Journeyman Make-up Artist

For John Jackson, the early 1990s brought a huge change that would evolve from the corporate world to a new career as an Oscar-winning make-u artist. After achieving his basic make-up training he focused on perfecting his skills with both realistic/character and beauty make-up and advanced prosthetics.  HIs thirst for knowledge and mentoring by Christina Smith and Matthew Mungle produced a make-up artist so skilled he became one of the most in-demand artists, able to accomplish anything the script described.  The gritty realism of Schindler’s List, Natural Born Killers, American History X juxtaposed with the fantasy of Beowulf and Daredevil, the pandemic template of Outbreak and  the delicate characterization of Frida, all show the vast array of abilities.  He was personal make-up artist for Ben Affleck, Mike Myers and Gary Sinise.  John has also been involved with training and mentoring numerous make-up artists who worked at WM Creations, paving the way for top-skilled special make-up effects artists who have joined Local 706. John Jackson has devoted many years of service to Local 706.  In the late 1990s-early 2000s he was heavily involved with the original Hollywood Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, building it from the ground floor and brought national attention to our Guild. After it dissolved, he was appointed, then re-elected four more times as Secretary-Treasurer of Local 706, responsible for the fiduciary duties that must be maintained as a responsible union.  He has been elected as a delegate both to the Quadrennial Convention and to the District 2 convention. John Jackson won the Oscar, the BAFTA and the HMUAHS Guild Award with Beatrice DeAlba for Outstanding Make-up for Frida. He achieved two Primetime Emmys for Six Feet Under and Citizen Cohn, plus five more nominations.  


STEVE LA PORTE
Journeyman Make-up Artist

As a youth, Steve LaPorte’s interests were primarily in art, magic, model making and commercial art.  On a whim he auditioned for the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Clown College, was accepted (one out of only 48 accepted out of 3,500 applicants) and the next four years changed his life forever. While with the circus he studied theatrical make-up and prosthetics, paving the way for his future. Steve settled in California and began his climb into the film and television industry and was hired for Universal tour’s "Land of a Thousand Faces" and "Castle Dracula’s" make-up shows.  He met Fred Phillips who hired Steve to produce masks and prosthetics for Under the Rainbow where he met Ve Neill; in turn he met Tom Burman who mentored Steve at his studio producing prosthetics for Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock, Buckaroo Bonsai and numerous other films.  He met Stan Winston and Rick Baker then was hired by Rob Bottin for all of The Howling productions and dozens of other films.  In 1984 Steve began working at NBC Studios running their make-up lab and joined Local 706. His next mentor Ken Chase brought Steve onboard The Color Purple to do the aging make-ups for Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover.  As was the practice then, he was often uncredited but Steve was busy behind-the-scenes creating prosthetics and make-up effects for Who Framed Roger Rabbit dozens of other films. LaPorte joined Ve Neill and Robert Short to win an Oscar in 1989 for Outstanding Makeup on Beetlejuice. He joined Jeff Dawn on Terminator 2 & 3 applying the Oscar winning, groundbreaking make-up/digital FX artistry on Schwarzenegger.  HIs skills and abilities have allowed him to head Lost, shot entirely in Hawaii, autonomously with his own lab to sculpt, mold and fabricate all the make-up effects on site for the six season series, and did the same for tv series Intelligence, Bosch, Longmire and Code Black.  Over the years Steve Laporte has conducted classes for 706 members in Character, Make-up Effects, Facial Hair and Clown make-up. He has won an Oscar and a Saturn Award for Beetlejuice,, a Primetime Emmy for X-Files, the MUAHS Guild Award for Breaking Bad, and the Oklahoma Film Icon Award. Steve LaPorte also developed and marketed the "Port-a-Case" set bag, and character cream make-up pallets the "Facemaker Series." Steve LaPorte is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. 


 

MATTHEW W. MUNGLE
Journeyman Make-up Artist

Matthew Mungle earned recognition as a top master of the elite, make-up effects illusion. He has 250 film and television projects to his credit, is always a veteran voice to aspiring artists hoping to find their way and takes many new members under his wing. He gives back to his Local 706 members as a mentor, role model and friend. As a young boy in Durant, Oklahoma, he recalls seeing Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy. He was fascinated by the make-up, often borrowing his mother’s make-up to "create his own version of horror." As he got older, he ordered theatrical make-up from New York experimenting with face casts and prosthetics on willing friends and family. His parents thought it was a passing phase he'd outgrow but he knew differently. In 1964, The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao came out and Matthew credits this film as his greatest influence and deciding factor to his path on becoming a special make-up effects artist. Matthew arrived in Hollywood in 1977 after applying and being accepted into Joe Blasco’s Make-up Center, the premier academy responsible for training many Local 706 members. Joe Blasco said this about Matthew: "From the very beginning, Matthew showed exceptional talent. I knew he had what it takes to become a success in this business." His first major film was Edward Scissorhands in 1990. Matthew has been honored with 26 Emmy nominations, finished his 11-year run creating graphic make-up effects for CSI: Las Vegas. His impressive list of films include Bram Stoker’s Dracula, earning him his first Oscar in 1992, Pay It Forward, Daredevil, Anchorman, The Omen, X-Men, The Tempest, The Butler, Schindler’s List, Outbreak, Primal Fear and Ghosts of Mississippi. After 42 years as a master of make-up effects artists, Matthew and husband of 40 years, John Jackson, moved to Texas. They set up a studio for his loyal clients, including stars Robert DeNiro, Glenn Close and Tracey Ullman. Matthew also conducts educational seminars to pass on his enormous wealth of knowledge.

 

 

CHRISTINA SMITH
Journeyman Make-up Artist

With nearly 100 credits to her résumé, Christina Smith began her career in make-up after assisting the renowned fashion photographer Bud Fraker. Christina started by advising Fraker on innovative make-up trends, and after a short time, Liza Minnelli asked Christina to work with her on the film Cabaret. Christina became one of the first female make-up artists to join Local 706 in 1974 and she used that experience to help mentor numerous other artists. She earned Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Schindler’s Listand another Oscar nom for Hook. In addition, Christina was Emmy-nominated for her work on King. She has been honored twice by the Canadian Film Council for her outstanding contribution to film. In 1994, Christina was the recipient of the Crystal Award, presented by the prestigious Women In Film organization, as well as being honored by The Girl Scouts of America as an Outstanding Female Achiever. 2003 brought an award nomination from the Local 706 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild for her work on Life as a House. In 2004, Maria Shriver listed her as an outstanding female achiever in California. Running alongside her film career, Christina has created a couture eyelash atelier that provides lashes to some of the biggest female celebrities in the world. Her clients include Kate Hudson, Lindsay Lohan, Julia Roberts, Rachel McAdams, Milla Jovovich, Monica Bellucci, Amber Valletta, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Dolly Parton and Shirley MacLaine, to name a few. This success is due to her amazing beauty work and the fact that Christina makes the only handmade eyelashes on the market. She is a spokesperson for Smart Cover Cosmetics and has previously partnered with M•A•C Cosmetics to develop a line of lashes. She has also been featured in numerous editorials for magazines such as Vogue and has appeared on QVC and HSN. Most recent film credits are Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, starring Milla Jovovich, and The Last Days in the Desert with Ewan McGregor. Christina is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

ALAN D’ANGERIO
Hair Stylist

As an apprentice at NBC, Alan D’Angerio learned the intricacies of his craft through practice and application in every facet from soap operas to game shows to sketch comedy,  His proficiency with wigs and period work made him immediately in-demand, showcasing his talents on the The Cotton Club, set in the 1920s-30s jazz club in Harlem.  Alan’s ability to tell a story through hair styling was displayed as he shouldered the anguished portrayal of the young attorney attempting to hide his HIV status in the film Philadelphia. Tom Hanks allowed Alan to shave his head and every progression was done with wigs, resulting in the beautiful but gut-wrenching story that earned him an Oscar nomination.  Alan’s portrayal of the Working Girl was the epitome of the 1980s hair fashion.  "I would throw Melanie’s hair in rollers, tease her hair in the front, bring it forward and spray it to death."  Married to the Mob began Alan’s long-time association with Michelle Pfeiffer and his list of multi-film clientele includes Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver, Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, Al Pacino and Ben Stiller. Because of his apprenticeship, it was instilled in Alan to mentor and educate dozens of hair artists over the years who would go on to bloom in their own careers.  He takes great pride knowing that the extra time and attention given has encouraged and developed skills and abilities to others and has uplifted the quality of the craft.  Alan’s mark of excellence has been left on so many films and television productions.  Not only does he have an Oscar nomination, Primetime Emmy nominations and Make-up Artist and Hair Stylist Guild nominations as well.  The OFTA (Online Film and Television Award) was presented to him for Game Change.  A partial list of the outstanding films includes:  New York Stories, Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, First Wives Club, Galaxy Quest, Zoolander (1 & 2), Kate and Leopold, The Hours, School or Rock, Their Eyes Were Watching God, A Single Man, Girl on the Train and Oceans 8.   



TERRY BALIEL
Journeyman Hair Stylist

Terry was accepted in a training program at San Francisco Opera Wig and Make-Up Department in 1980. There, he trained in the art of building wigs and theatrical make-up. During that year, he apprenticed at Charleston, South Carolina’s Spoleto Festival in their hair and make-up department. At the end of this program, he was hired by Theatrical Hairgoods Company to travel to regional opera and theater companies to run their hair and make-up departments for more than ten years. He was wigmaster at San Diego Opera for nine years, during which time he won a Guild Award for Best Theatrical Hair Design of their production of The Magic Flute. He has worked at San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet and became an associate member of Local 706. In 1986, he was fortunate to be the key on his first film, Tucker. For the next 13 years, he continued to work in both film and theater until 1999 when he was asked to come to Los Angeles to work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Shortly thereafter, he became a journeyman of Local 706. He has been part of some wonderfully creative projects, including The Joy Luck Club, The Last Samurai, Alice in Wonderland, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, Thor, The Chronicles of Riddick, The Prestige and Call of the Wild, to name a few. He has also worked on television shows, some of which are Deadwood, Miss Rose White, Cinema Verite, Agent Carter, Hair Spray Live! and Transparent. Terry is a member of the Motion Picture Academy, the Television Academy and on a committee to help develop exhibits for the Motion Picture Academy Museum. He is the recipient of three Emmys and four Guild Awards for period hair styling. He also has taught classes in period hair styling.

 


JUDY CROWN
Journeyman Hair Stylist

Judy Crown is best known for her work on the beloved shows  Murphy Brown, Designing Women and Seinfeld. Seinfeld shared magnificent phrases that live on and so does the hair. After re-styling Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ hair when she got hired, Oprah Winfrey called and asked for Judy Crown to be on her show to talk about "Seinfeld Hair."
Jerry Seinfeld told Judy that when she talked to him in the make-up room, it relaxed him, calmed him down before the show. She has a relaxing effect. Judy Crown has established iconic hair styles that will linger on in syndication forever. She has served on the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences as Governor, on PGEC peer groups and as a Blue Ribbon panelist. She has two Primetime Emmy Awards, five nominations and one nomination for a MUAHS Guild Award. As a former Local 706 Secretary-Treasurer, Executive Board member and Negotiations Committee member, she has served her Local 706 members continually for years. She volunteered to be a journeyman class instructor and a journeyman test examiner. As an advocate for equality, Judy Crown led the movement to raise union hair stylist wages to equal pay with make-up artists in the mid-1990s. She is a mentor who always contributes to the betterment of Local 706 membership. Education was always a passion of Judy's. She taught new members coming in and was a patient mentor who inspired hope and ignited the imagination of new, inexperienced members who needed guidance. She taught them they could achieve anything if you are willing to learn. Judy has been a personal stylist for Lauren Bacall, Candice Bergen and Angela Lansbury. Other TV shows include Helter Skelter, Runaway Jury, Growing Pains, My Sister Sam, Moonlighting, The Dukes of Hazzard. Film work consists of Diamonds (personal: Lauren Bacall), Denial (personal: Jason Alexander),  My Fellow Americans (personal: Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Return to Two Moon Junction (personal: Louise Fletcher).

PAULETTA O. LEWIS
Journeyman Hair Stylist

After attaining her cosmetology license and winning numerous awards in Northern California, Pauletta O. Lewis moved to Southern California to pursue her dream of working in the entertainment industry and it was soon realized.  She was hired on the NBC daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives and won an Emmy.  Within a couple of years she transferred into feature films and episodic television and was taken under the wing of some of the most respected 706 hair stylists. Her first feature was The Rocketeer, a glorious period/fantasy film and the head hairstylists instilled in Pauletta expectations of perfection and to practice, practice, practice.  She found her niche and was insatiable to learn more and more each day about wigs and authentic period hairstyling.  Those skills propelled her into more job on films that displayed  her talent in retro hair styling:  The  Mambo Kings, Fried Green Tomatoes and The Five Heartbeats.  Within a year she was hired to be the department head on the Wayans Brothers iconic sketch comedy In Living Color allowing her to display her creative comedy characters.  She developed a strong working relationship with Jim Carrey creating outrageous, hilarious hairstyles that are still instantly recognizable. Her passion for perfection has achieved both Emmy and our own Guild Awards recognitions.  

Pauletta has always been an activist on the union and political arenas.  She has served on the Local 706 Executive Board and was a distinct presence in Sacramento when the IATSE was lobbying to achieve the California Film and Television Tax Incentive.(AB1839). She has been active in organizing drives, The Women’s March(es) and represented Local 706 in the May Day Parade.  She has volunteered for the children’s holiday parties on the Paramount Studios lot and each year she walks with AIDS Walk LA.  

Her most recognizable work not only comes from the productions already listed, but many others: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Poetic Justice, 50 First Dates, The Artist, Hail, Caesar!, Martin, Higher Learning, House of Lies, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Ali: An American Hero, Don King: Only in America, and dozens more.

 


JULIA L. WALKER
Journeyman Hair Stylist

From the times she became a Local 706 member, Julia L. Walker’s distinctive talent was recognized.  She began making wigs for Victoria Wood but knew she wanted to work in film and television and achieved her goals at Universal Studios and Disney. After achieving roster status, she was almost immediately scooped up by one of the most iconic films at Universal Studios, The Blues Brothers.  Comedian Richard Pryor realized Julia’s unique abilities and they did a number of projects together, but when Julia collaborated with Whoopi Goldberg on Jumpin’ Jack Flash in the mid 1980s, it was the beginning of an artistic partnership that lasted nearly 30 years, dozens of film and television productions, and one of the most iconic, recognizable hair styles in the world.  It is almost impossible to imagine Whoopi Goldberg without her signature dreadlocks. With more than 90 credits in film and television, Julia L. Walker has won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Mini Series (Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story) and been nominated twice more.  She was honored at the Local 706 Diamond 60th Anniversary for her outstanding achievements, as well as the African American Film Marketplace.  Julia has been an educator and mentor for numerous 706 members, shared her gifts and realized the importance of the training needed for ethnic hair styling. She served on the 706 Board of Trustees and achieved her Gold Card.
